Junior Primary

Our Early Years students learn best through play, hands-on experiences and meaningful connections. Through playful learning, children develop confidence, creativity and curiosity as they explore the world around them. They learn how to solve problems, work with others, build friendships and develop important social and emotional skills. Play-based learning also supports the development of fine and gross motor skills that are essential for growth and learning.

Our Literacy and Numeracy programs are designed around engaging, real-life learning experiences that help students make meaningful connections with their learning. Buddy programs with older students support younger children as they begin school, helping them feel safe, connected and part of our welcoming school community.

English

In Reception and Year 1, we use the InitiaLit program to teach reading and spelling through a structured and explicit phonics approach. Students learn letter-sound relationships and how to apply these skills when reading and writing.

Children also build vocabulary, listening and oral language skills through rich and engaging children’s literature. We value the important partnership between school and home, and encourage families to read regularly with their children. Ongoing assessment throughout the program helps teachers monitor progress and tailor learning to individual needs.

Mathematics

Our Mathematics program uses a hands-on approach to help students build strong number understanding and confidence. Students learn to recognise numbers, develop counting skills and explore part-part-whole concepts through engaging activities and discussions.

Number Talks are an important part of Mathematics learning across all year levels, encouraging students to explain their thinking and develop problem-solving strategies. Teachers use a range of assessments, including standardised testing and the Big Ideas in Mathematics framework, to plan differentiated learning programs that support every child’s growth and achievement.

Transition

We work closely with our school-based preschool to provide a smooth and positive transition to school. Throughout the year, preschool children regularly visit the Junior Primary classroom to build relationships with staff and students and become familiar with the school environment.

Our Junior Primary students also visit the preschool for structured play sessions, helping younger children feel confident, connected and excited about starting school.
